When Amouage released Outlands as part of The Essences collection, the launch edition sold out within hours. Composed by Cécile Zarokian — one of the most respected perfumers working today — it arrived in the first new bottle design the house had introduced in fifteen years, and immediately became the collection's standout.
It earned that reception. Outlands is built on a contrast most fragrances don't attempt: a light, almost carefree citrus opening that gives way to something far darker and more remote. The name is the concept — a journey out past the familiar, into territory that isn't comfortable but is impossible to look away from.
Outlander is our interpretation, built as an Extrait de Parfum in our Newton-le-Willows workshop.
The scent pyramid
It opens deceptively bright — zesty lemon and bergamot with a crackle of Sichuan pepper. Then the landscape shifts. A heart of saffron, cumin, anise and rose brings heat and a faintly animalic edge, before patchouli, vanilla, benzoin and smoky amber resins settle into a long, enveloping drydown.

What does Amouage Outlands smell like?
It opens bright and citrusy — lemon and bergamot with a peppery lift — then turns considerably darker. The heart brings saffron, cumin, anise and rose, and the base settles into patchouli, amber, benzoin and soft vanilla with a smoky, resinous character. It's an amber-spicy fragrance rather than an oud one, despite often being described as Middle Eastern in spirit.
Who created Amouage Outlands?
Cécile Zarokian, for Amouage's The Essences collection. She has composed several of the house's most respected fragrances. The launch edition sold out within hours of going on sale, and Outlands became the collection's bestseller.
Why is the original so expensive?
Amouage is a luxury house from Oman working at the top of niche perfumery, and The Essences fragrances were made to an unusual specification — highly concentrated, with a six-month maturation including a double infusion using sandalwood chips and oak barrels. That process, the raw materials and the brand's positioning all sit in the price. Our alternative puts the cost into the fragrance oils rather than the packaging and prestige.
How close is Outlander to the original?
It's built around the same core accord — the citrus opening, the saffron-cumin-rose heart, the amber-resin base. Is it masculine or feminine?

- Less is More: Our fragrances are concentrated Extraits. We recommend starting with just 2–3 sprays. You can always add more, but you can’t take it away!
- Target the Heat: Apply to your pulse points where your blood pumps near the surface (wrists, neck, inside elbows, and behind the ears). The heat helps project the scent.
- Don't Rub: After spraying your wrists, avoid rubbing them together. This creates friction that can "bruise" the top notes and make them fade faster. Just spray and let it dry.
- Hydrate First: Fragrance lasts longer on hydrated skin. For maximum longevity, apply an unscented moisturizer before spraying your perfume.
